چکیده

It is known that a large, charged body immersed in a solution of multivalent counterions may undergo charge inversion as the counterions adsorb to its surface. We use the theory of charge inversion to examine the case of a deformable, porous macroion which may adsorb multivalent ions into its bulk to form a threedimensional strongly-correlated liquid. This adsorption may lead to non-monotonic changes in the size of the macroion as multivalent ions are added to the solution. The macroion first shrinks as its bare charge is screened and then reswells as the adsorbed ions invert the sign of the net charge. We derive a value for the outward pressure experienced by such a macroion as a function of the ion concentration in solution. We find that for small deviations in the concentration of multivalent ions away from the neutral point (where the net charge of the body is zero), the swollen size grows parabolically with the logarithm of the ratio of multivalent ion concentration to the concentration at the neutral point.

Screening of a macroion by multivalent ions: correlation-induced inversion of charge.

Screening of a strongly charged macroion by multivalent counterions is considered. It is shown that counterions form a strongly correlated liquid at the surface of the macroion. Cohesive energy of this liquid leads to additional attraction of counterions to the surface, which is absent in conventional solutions of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. Away from the surface this attraction can be take...

Adsorption of charged particles on an oppositely charged surface: oscillating inversion of charge.

Adsorption of multivalent counterions on the charged surface of a macroion is known to lead to inversion of the macroion charge due to the strong lateral correlations of counterions. We consider a nontrivial role of the excluded volume of counterions on this effect. It is shown analytically that when the bare charge of the macroion increases, its net charge including the adsorbed counterions os...

Kinetics of macroion coagulation induced by multivalent counterions.

Due to the strong correlations between multivalent counterions condensed on a macroion, the net macroion charge changes sign at some critical counterion concentration. This effect is known as the charge inversion. Near this critical concentration the macroion net charge is small. Therefore, short range attractive forces between macroions dominate Coulomb repulsion and lead to their coagulation....

Overcharging of a macroion by an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte

Complexation of a polyelectrolyte with an oppositely charged spherical macroion is studied for both salt free and salty solutions. When a polyelectrolyte winds around the macroion, its turns repel each other and form an almost equidistant solenoid. It is shown that this repulsive correlations of turns lead to the charge inversion: more polyelectrolyte winds around the macroion than it is necess...

PES/Quaternized-PES Blend Anion Exchange Membranes: Investigation of Polymer Compatibility and Properties of the Blend

Polyethersulfone (PES)-based anion exchange blend membranes were prepared from quaternized-PES (Q-PES) and N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) casting solutions with water as coagulant via non-solvent induced phase inversion. The compatibility of the blend system was investigated through thermodynamic studies while membrane formation was determined using the cloud point techni...
